KIDS BEDROOM DECOR Questions

PinterestEmailPrintFriendlyShare

William asks…

Where can I find black bear kids room decor?

I have a rustic, log style home and want to decorate my son’s room in black bears….I am finding all kinds that would be okay for adult’s room but need something cute for a kids room. Any advice?

A:

I agree locating black bear decor for a young boys room is a challenge. That said, you should be able to find some great black bear decor items for your son’s room on Amazon. Here are some of my favorite black bear decorations that will grow with your child.

Thomas asks…

What is the best way to remove wallpaper from my kids bedroom walls?

I tried a hair dryer and it did not work very well. I’m peeling my kids wallpaper off with my nails but it’s taking me way to long. Any ideas?

A:

Believe it or not, the trick is to score the wallpaper first with a wallpaper scoring tool (like paper tiger) and applying some fabric softener (the cheap stuff is fine). What you want to do is put a little fabric softener on a sponge and let it soak in for 5 to 10 minutes and then your wallpaper should easily peel off.

DECOR IDEAS FOR YOUR KIDS ROOM

PinterestEmailPrintFriendlyShare

by Irene Ashley

Your child’s room is important for your child as it is his domain. Kids in the age group of six to 10 are in their latency period when they are neither in their childhood nor in their adolescence. This is the time they explore and develop their minds. A well-set room for them helps them to have their own personal space that they love and call their own.

Their room needs a strong chair, a big writing desk and enough space for them to play around in the most funny and silly ways ever. The best thing is to get you kid involved while selecting the decor for his/her room. This raises the probability that he/she will take pride in what he has selected for himself in his own personal space. They have their own hobbies, interests and likes, and preferences about various things. As a parent, one should not ever overlook them while decorating their kids’ room. A room’s decor will vary according to the gender of the kid. A girl will like pink wallpapers, fairy tale themes for her self or other subtle ideas for her room. However, some ideas can be gender neutral. The following gender-neutral ideas will help you in decorating your kids’ room perfectly.

An inspirational theme
The basic step is to discover your kid’s area of interest and then to go more about it. By applying a theme to the room, you give your child an opportunity to develop and be influenced to become as a good person in his life. A kid may select astronomy for his room theme because he likes science and its wonders. Who knows he grows up as a scientist?

Save space
You can always visit a professional to help you save space in your kids’ rooms so that they look clutter free and neat all the time. Some useful tips given by experts are open closets, make shelves in the walls or opt for foldable fixtures in the rooms. An expert will be able to serve your needs better by having a personal look himself.

Mix those colors
A room will look good with different colors on each wall, floor and the ceiling. In addition, it is most likely to appeal almost all the kids. A very different wooden closet and a unique carpet will make the room all the more attractive.

Beds
Kid’s beds are available in various kinds of patterns such as stripes, plains or solids. In addition, they can match with one of your colors on the walls. Choose the one, which your child has selected, for him.

Writing desks
School going kids have to study and complete their homework at home. They need a spacious study table with a comfortable chair that supports a perfect posture for their growing bodies. Also, make sure the table is not kept right at the window. Rather a wall behind the kid is desirable for an ideal study space. The reasons for this can be attributed to the science of ‘Vaastu Shastra’.

Plan Your Room Redesign Carefully

By Sue E Krippner

When you tire from the look of a bedroom, living room, kitchen, or family room, it’s time for a room redesign. The project can be as extensive as you like or as little as a few changes. With any home interior project, keep the functionality of a room in mind so that the space continues to meet yours and your family’s needs.

Start with a pencil and paper before you begin your room redesign. Critique your space and make a note of everything that you both dislike and like. Establish the purpose for your room and decide whether your new plans will change this. You must have a clear image in mind to be able to plan towards your goal.

A room redesign should follow a three-step process. To begin with get rid of all the clutter, before being creative and settling on your new style. You can look online for ideas if you are stuck when it comes to deciding upon a style. The third step involves the use of various tools to help you, including artwork, accents, plants and accessories, to help you finish off your look.

Do not think that a room redesign project has to cost a lot of money. The task can be simple, need the involving the replacement of some accessories, introducing some family heirlooms, or simply displaying some items that you have not used previously because they did not fit a decor. Accessorizing is a cheap and easy way to find a new look.

Begin with a focal point in your room and consider rearranging your furniture from there. This is often a great place to commence a room redesign project, but bear in mind the room’s traffic pattern before starting.

Changing a rooms color scheme is a common room redesign technique. Decide on a color scheme and whether you want to paint or wallpaper the walls. Try to choose colors that match what is currently in the room so theres no need to buy all new furnishings.

Artwork can come to your aid when you are considering your next room redesign project. If you change what is hanging on your wall, you will remake the look of a room quite simply. You can opt for posters or prints, and do not have to purchase costly original art. As another alternative you might like to display your child’s artwork or photographs from an event which means a lot to you. Other easy refresh ideas include the placement of sculptures on shelves or coffee tables or ceramics.

If planning a major room redesign, you can rely on 3D software to help you plan out your design based on the rooms configuration. Software design tools allow you to select choices and see what the room will look like when done. Its a great way to organize your thoughts and see the finished project before you even get started.

The Easy Way to Choose the Right Frame For a Photo

By Sue E Krippner

When choosing the right frame for a photo, there are 2 general things you must consider: the photo that will be going into the frame and where the frame will eventually be located.

The first cue you will take from the photo when choosing a frame is the size of the photo. Make sure you measure the photo and choose an appropriate size frame. Nothing is more unfortunate than choosing the “perfect” frame only to find that it is too small for your photo.

If you want to matte the photo, you will need to decide on a larger frame and how much of the matte you will need to best highlight the photo. You also need to consider the content of the photo you are framing. Is it a family photo? A photo of friends? A recent vacation? Choose a frame which complements the content of the photograph. If it is a silly picture of a group of friends, you may want to choose a whimsical frame. If it happens to be a photo of your beach vacation, you may opt for a frame with a tropical theme.

Avoid the common mistake of choosing a frame that distracts from the photo. The frames purpose is to compliment the featured photo. A frame that is too loud or busy will be distracting. To reiterate: Watch the size of the frame to photo. You want to enhance the photo not bury it in a fancy frame.

Second, you must take into account where the photo will be placed once it has been framed. Most broadly, you should ask yourself whether the framed photo is for yourself or whether you will be giving it as a gift. If the photo is a gift, you should choose a frame which suits the other person’s tastes, which may differ from your own. If you are choosing a frame for yourself, ask yourself where you are likely to hang or place the photo.

Check to see that the frame you have chosen can be used as both a freestanding frame and a standalone frame. A more versatile frame can be used in more locations. If you plan to place the framed photo near other photos, you should choose a frame which complements nearby frames. You certainly don’t have to choose an identical frame, but it is best to choose a frame which is similar to the others in size, color, texture, or pattern.

Once you have decided on the frame and installed the photo, now it’s time to find that perfect location to display your precious memory. It is better to place your photo’s in a grouping where they will draw more attention.

Bedroom Decorating Ideas For Children

By Sue E Krippner

Reflect for a moment back to your childhood. Did you love your bedroom, or was it a parent’s version of their bedroom decorating ideas. If you loved the room you grew up in, there is a strong likelihood that you were a participant in the bedroom decorating planning process at some level.

This continues to be the best way to create the space in a home where a child can develop their own personality. Involving the kids in the bedroom decorating department goes way beyond just giving them a bit of personal indulgence, it also…

  • Encourages discussion between parent and child.
  • Gives them a sense of “ownership” which just might help motivate them to keep things a bit neater.
  • Opens the door to a “teachable moment”. Your child can begin to learn about budgeting, decision making, cooperation and the steps it takes to complete a long term goal.
  • Gives a teenager permission to develop their own bedroom decorating ideas, that could open up doors of better communication.

So, how do we get our kids to open up to expressing their bedroom decorating ideas?

Well, for little ones, an excellent way is to first, provide a brand new box of crayons and fresh clean paper. Tell them to create their favorite space on paper.

Explain that you want them to draw their “dream room”, including everything they would want in it no matter how crazy or fantastical it may seem.

For the older kids you will need to take a different approach.

This age group will have no shortage of ideas once you get them to open up a bit.

The goal with them may be to just to keep things focused. To do that, how about a creating a short questionnaire. With questions written in personal format that may include:

  • What would you like to change in your room right now?
  • What do you like about your room? What do you not like?
  • What are your favorite colors?
  • What would your perfect environment look like if you had no limitations?

A twist on this to get a resistant teen to participate in exposing their bedroom decorating ideas is to have both you and your child fill out the questions. When finished, compare notes to see just how well you know your son or daughter. This will definitely open the door to some sort of interaction!

Once you have discovered what your child’s ideal bedroom decorating ideas are, be prepared to take things to the next step.

What can you realistically implement considering, time, budget, and room size. What can be traded, sold or reworked to fit into this new look. How willing are you to allow them to paint walls or introduce some crazy decor (especially with teens).

Your budget may not allow for all the ideas suggested, in that case. You can work together to…

Create a wish list – with the commitment of buying things as they have been budgeted.

Decide together to determine what are the best choices out of the many. It could just be a simple paint job, moving furniture, or a window treatment change that would be satisfactory.

What ever your determining factors are – A room “just for me” is a room designed to encourage, inspire, provide safety and certainly feelings of love and acceptance.

If you don’t like the results…well, you can always close the door!

KIDS WALL ART

Decorating With Wall Art

By Sue E Krippner

If you’re thinking that decorating with wall art is limited to hanging pictures on that vertical space, think again. Check out these tips and tricks that might be “just the ticket” inspiration to completing your wall decorating project.

The truth is you can hang just about anything that compliments your design scheme (as long as it can be hung securely).

Let’s start with some simple picture ideas.

Groupings

If you have a large wall but you don’t really feel like hanging 1 huge piece of art. The Decorating trick is to create a grouping of smaller works. This gives that space the appearance of a larger picture.

Provide a visual link to give your pictures continuity by using a similar frame around each one or having variations of the same subject matter displayed. If your room is more of a formal setting, hang your wall art using precise measurements of spacing and distance.

Originals

Create your own works of art With today’s easy to use digital cameras. With the assistance of a walk in photo print shop or online art supply site you can download your favorite photo, size it, print it and frame it. It’s personal art on display! The options of printing on canvas or paper expands your creativity even more.

Another fantastic resource is a quality fabric store that offers a wide variety of quilting and home decor fabrics and wall paper prints. There are perfect fabrics to simply cut, stretch and frame. Buy a cheap canvas and wrap them around the back and then staple your fabric find to create a fresh wall art piece for pennies on the dollar. Match a print from the sofa or window treatments to create a nice flow throughout the room.

Think Outside the Frame

As mentioned earlier, decorating with wall art does not need to be limited to framed prints and pictures. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to do something unexpected. Here are a few suggestions to get you thinking about ways to highlight your walls:

  • It’s a shame to leave those wonderful antique plates hidden away in a hutch. Hang them on a wall in combination with a picture commemorating the period of the dinnerware.
  • Put that tapestry you love on the wall rather than on the floor by suspending it from a decorative rod.
  • Double up by using an old single paned window with pictures placed inside the individual frames fitted behind the glass.
  • Decorative shelving can support your more 3 dimensional pieces of art. Think of it as a mantle without the fireplace, and decorate accordingly.
  • Insert an arrangement of decorative tiles into a frame. With the right combination it can become a wall hung mosaic.
  • Cut a nice slice off a unique stump or piece of driftwood. Sand and varnish, and it’s a fantastic original.
  • Hang a piece of “gingerbread” from an old house. Add patterns, letters or images made out of vinyl to any wall. There easy to put up with no damage to the walls when removed.
  • And the list could go on and on…

Interior decorating is all about using your space as a canvas. Lighten up, enjoy the process – there is no right or wrong, especially when it comes to decorating with wall art. Have fun!

The First Step to Understanding Your Decorating Styles

By Sue E Krippner

In all the flurry and popularity of interior design information today, you may be feeling frustrated because you don’t know your decorating style. You are not alone with those feelings.

Despite what some may say about the unimportance of home decorating, studies have shown that a majority of people in the United States would not turn down a free Design analysis and would love to have folks like “Extreme Make Over” knock on their door.

To leave that frustration behind you can choose 1 of these 3 options:

1. Hire a designer who will work with you to provide definition and clarity to your likes and dislikes. Though this is a popular option for some, others will find the cost of this service prohibitive.

2. Interior design is an important aspect of living life to the fullest. Minimizing this importance only limits your positive life experience. By choosing this option you will never truly enjoy your home because it does not reflect your true value and expression of creativity and design.

3. Decide today you will work toward understanding your interior design preferences by reading through this article to get started in the right direction.

Determining your personal decorating style can be a fun adventure of not only home design development but one of self discovery.

The best way to start is to begin browsing and then literally ripping out photographs from decorating magazines. Browse the internet and download pictures that really grab your interest and liking.

Gather any and every picture that grabs your attention as it relates to interior design; accents, pictures, furniture, color, lighting…etc.

As you gather your photo’s, display them on a wall or on a large piece of poster board. They can be arranged by room, color, furniture type etc. Maybe a board per room, or collection by color.

Whatever categories you choose it’s important to put them up someplace where you can easily view them.

Don’t focus on matching or coordinating, you want to select everything and anything that you find attractive in a home,.

Once you have a grand collection of your favorites. Arrange your boards on a wall, lean them in line against the back of a couch or hang them all the wall. Step back far enough to view them together in a panoramic style.

Now look for themes. Do you see a color trend? Do you see a large collection of natural woods? Look at shape of furniture. Are there big windows or small ones in the pictures. Warm and toasty rooms or big and breezy? Do you see simple smooth colors or are there a lot of textures and patterns…

Next, make a list of those consistences and begin removing those photo’s that don’t quite fit into the common elements.

This is the first step on your journey to determining your design style. The next step is really up to you. Maybe you could start with painting a wall, the color of your liking. Get excited about what you have discovered and develop a plan for implementation.

Cheap Ways to Decorate Small Spaces

By Sue E Krippner

Decorating Small Spaces on the cheap is fun! It’s a call to thinking outside of the box with every square inch being at a premium.

The scale of presenting specifics for each room is beyond the scope of this article, so we have fine tuned some cheap universal tips and tricks, that can be applied to any small space throughout the house.

Think “Double Duty” - There are many ways to maximize smaller areas by combining more than one function to the items arranged in the room. Consider these powerful examples:

1. An ottoman is a cheap multi use tool that has hidden storage space AND a turn over top that could double as a cocktail or end table. With the storage underneath you can hide throws, games, t.v. controllers or whatever need may arise.

2. Replace a solid, space closing door, with a wood framed french or glass one. This will open up that dead end by allowing in more light. This cheap solution will also create a transparent divider that pulls in the other room while provide conversational privacy or muting TV sounds.

3. Double up that home office into a guest room. Inventive cheap wall units are available with an amazing variety of configuration versatility. These cheap units can provide a sophisticated office area by day and a luxurious guest bedroom at night. Type in “Murphy beds” into a search engine to see what pops up.

Think “The Illusion Of Space” - To brighten and create the appearance of a larger small space, place a mirror in an area that best reflects the most room expansion. Near a window works well or directly across from a blank wall or those wonderful french doors mentioned earlier.

An entire wall of mirror is a bit extreme for some but provides a perfect cheap solution for others. To the minds eye, mirrors are interpreted as windows. Try them in a room that has none of these fresh air openings to minimize that closed in feeling. Place them to the back of book cases or shelves to create the appearance of depth. A super cheap space creating solution!

Think, “The Law Of Flat Surfaces” – Any level of maximizing space and design will be destroyed by allowing too much stuff to accumulate. Even a great room will look small if clutter is allowed to rule. The heave and leave habit is a hard one to break but with some determined organization this interior weed can be eliminated by implementing this simple law.

The Law of Flat Surfaces is a super simple – super cheap guideline to keep all your horizontal surfaces free of random stuff. The floor, counter tops, area tables, shelves, fire place mantel, the list goes on and on but, by keeping these areas clear a person will be amazed at how simple it is to maintain any small space to stay comfortable and always ready for house guests.

Decorating for small spaces will always present unique challenges. Along with those challenges is an unconventional opportunity to develop one of a kind affordably cheap design solutions. Traditional shapes and sizes don’t always work but with a little research, shopping and possibly professional consultation – that small space will make a large impression.

CHOOSING PAINT COLORS

Interior Decorating Ideas – Choosing Paint Colors For Small Rooms

By Lynn Cressy

While decorating small rooms it is very important to choose the right paint since the paint on your walls reflects your personality. The walls should look welcoming to your guests as well as appealing to you at the same time.

Painting is one of the most important aspects of the house and one of the most essential basics that you should consider when you are thinking of decorating small rooms. Paint is obviously very important for the preservation and beauty of the exterior of the house but the paint in the interior of the house is equally important.

Ideas for painting small rooms include painting at least one wall a vivid color and then using softer colors in similar shades for the adjoining walls. The boldness of the accent wall depends on your personality and how much color you can tolerate in the room. Bright color can also be added to the room in the form of artwork and furniture.

There are so many paint colors on the market today that sometimes making a choice can be quite confusing. However, it is now possible to run a computer simulation of your painted rooms so that you can decide upon a perfect choice of color for a room.

Another way to decide on paint color is to choose from the graduated color paint strips that you will find in every paint department or paint store. Take these home and hold them up against the wall as well as the furniture in the room to get an idea of how the paint would look in the room. To go a step further, some paint stores sell a small sample of paint for you to try on your walls before making your final purchase.

Remember that it is important to choose a paint color when decorating a small room that is easy to maintain. It is wise to choose paint that is durable against natural wear and tear and will last for the next several years. Keep in mind that wall color will look different depending on the lighting in the room.

Do not compromise on quality when looking for paint. It is ok to pay a little extra for a paint that will last for several years than choose cheap quality paint that will chip and show smudges in a few months. The paint on the walls should be easy to clean and maintain so that your house always looks beautiful.
