Land of Nod: Planning a Child’s Room Decor

By: Sandy Winslow

Every child needs a bedroom or play area that is all their own. Imagine for a moment creating the ideal Land of Nod…nodding off that is. If you are considering updating, upgrading or just decorating your child’s room, having the right accessories for the theme you select is critical. In fact, it is the accessories and the little touches that will make the biggest difference in the overall look and appeal of any space. The good news is that there are many ways to add a little class and character to any space today, especially when you focus on your options.

Before moving on to the decor in a bedroom or play area, first consider the actual furniture you will select. The furniture sets the tone for the space. Purchasing a bed in the shape of a car, for example is a great way to get that race car theme into the room. On the other hand, being practical and purchasing furniture that will grow with your child can be just as valuable, if not more so. Depending on your budget and tastes, select the furniture, rugs, curtains and toy boxes for the space first. From this point, you can move on to select other options.

The next step is to consider a theme. You could go with a favorite cartoon character, one of theirs or perhaps even one of yours. On the other hand, you may want to consider selecting wall art in a whimsical style that represents who they are or what they love. You can even select designs that help you to create the space that invites imagination and creativity. To do this, consider each type of item you place into the room, from the wall art to the rugs and even to the types of toys you purchase for your child.

That is far from all you have to do, though. Take a look at some of the options available to you in terms of theme. You can find a wide range of selection to choose from online for your Land of Nod, but you will also find that sometimes it is up to you to select the colors, characters, ideas and inspirations from your own thoughts and desires for the space. You may want to select a special color pallet that works well in the room. On the other hand, a space theme, a princess theme, or even just a letter and number theme may be the route you are taking for your children. These are all good ideas, but take them and make them your own.

Then, focus on those items that are going to add substance and value to the space. For example, toy boxes are a critical purchase for most children’s rooms. You may want to consider the shelving options you have as well as tables and chairs. Placing hooks in the room offers a place for backpacks and coats. You may want to select gear that is all eco friendly, especially if your child is a baby or toddler. These items add function to the space while still giving it the child’s charm that you are likely after.

Room decor can be difficult for a child because often times the parent’s are unable to make decisions because their child is too young. However, by selecting furniture that will grow with the child, and then upgrading the look of the room every few years, your child will be in a welcoming and warm space that they will simply love to be a part of. Go ahead and consider the options available to you to create your child’s own Land of Nod in terms of the room decor, furniture and just everything else you need for your child’s space.

DECOR IDEAS FOR YOUR KIDS ROOM

PinterestEmailPrintFriendlyShare

by Irene Ashley

Your child’s room is important for your child as it is his domain. Kids in the age group of six to 10 are in their latency period when they are neither in their childhood nor in their adolescence. This is the time they explore and develop their minds. A well-set room for them helps them to have their own personal space that they love and call their own.

Their room needs a strong chair, a big writing desk and enough space for them to play around in the most funny and silly ways ever. The best thing is to get you kid involved while selecting the decor for his/her room. This raises the probability that he/she will take pride in what he has selected for himself in his own personal space. They have their own hobbies, interests and likes, and preferences about various things. As a parent, one should not ever overlook them while decorating their kids’ room. A room’s decor will vary according to the gender of the kid. A girl will like pink wallpapers, fairy tale themes for her self or other subtle ideas for her room. However, some ideas can be gender neutral. The following gender-neutral ideas will help you in decorating your kids’ room perfectly.

An inspirational theme
The basic step is to discover your kid’s area of interest and then to go more about it. By applying a theme to the room, you give your child an opportunity to develop and be influenced to become as a good person in his life. A kid may select astronomy for his room theme because he likes science and its wonders. Who knows he grows up as a scientist?

Save space
You can always visit a professional to help you save space in your kids’ rooms so that they look clutter free and neat all the time. Some useful tips given by experts are open closets, make shelves in the walls or opt for foldable fixtures in the rooms. An expert will be able to serve your needs better by having a personal look himself.

Mix those colors
A room will look good with different colors on each wall, floor and the ceiling. In addition, it is most likely to appeal almost all the kids. A very different wooden closet and a unique carpet will make the room all the more attractive.

Beds
Kid’s beds are available in various kinds of patterns such as stripes, plains or solids. In addition, they can match with one of your colors on the walls. Choose the one, which your child has selected, for him.

Writing desks
School going kids have to study and complete their homework at home. They need a spacious study table with a comfortable chair that supports a perfect posture for their growing bodies. Also, make sure the table is not kept right at the window. Rather a wall behind the kid is desirable for an ideal study space. The reasons for this can be attributed to the science of ‘Vaastu Shastra’.

Set the Room’s Mood With Warm and Cool Colors

By Sue E Krippner

Interior design resources can help guide you in the proper use of warm and cool colors based on the size and location of a room. In general, warm colors are used in rooms that tend to get little sun or where the lighting is subdued. On the other hand, cool colors are used in bright rooms to tone them down.

Using warm and cool colors is an interior design trick of the trade that can give a room a completely new look. It’s an inexpensive way to redesign a room without doing too much more. To go with the new look, use slipcovers on furniture to match the color scheme and evaluate accessories so they complement the new colors.

When trying to achieve a particular mood for a room, the use of warm and cool colors on the walls, furnishings and accessories will help in setting a welcoming atmosphere. A warm color scheme features reds, yellows and oranges, while cool colors are blues, greens and violets.

When working with warm and cool colors, some can make a room appear smaller or larger than it is. Once you have an idea of which colors you want to use, research how they can impact your room design. There are online tools and resources that enable you to see the finished room by selecting your colors and inputting room dimensions. These resources are extremely valuable because you can determine whether the color scheme is right for a room before investing in paint or actually painting the entire room and discovering it’s not the right look.

While warm and cool colors on the walls of a room can create a certain mood, they do the same for furnishings in a room. For instance, brown triggers feelings of warmth and comfort, which is why it is often the main color or an accent color on furniture and accessories.

With warm and cool colors, you can create a welcoming feel in a room. Certain colors bring out certain emotions. Blue, for example, provides a relaxing, peaceful and calming feeling, so it’s a good color in a bedroom or study. Orange induces a warm and inviting feeling, perfect for areas where you entertain. Red stimulates brain activity, so it’s ideal in a home office, while yellow stimulates creativity so it’s good for craft rooms or playrooms. Green is an overall color creating a feeling of rest, relaxation and growth, so it works in any room

It’s important to factor in the room’s function when choosing paint colors. Along with the primary color, experiment with different shades of the same color, as well as contrasting colors and shades. Pair your primary color with accent colors. It’s also okay to mix warm and cool colors in the same room.

Which warm and cool colors to use will come easily once you identify the focal point of the room. The color of your focal point will set the main mood color for the room and from there you can build upon which shades and accent colors to use.
