Land of Nod: Planning a Child’s Room Decor

By: Sandy Winslow

Every child needs a bedroom or play area that is all their own. Imagine for a moment creating the ideal Land of Nod…nodding off that is. If you are considering updating, upgrading or just decorating your child’s room, having the right accessories for the theme you select is critical. In fact, it is the accessories and the little touches that will make the biggest difference in the overall look and appeal of any space. The good news is that there are many ways to add a little class and character to any space today, especially when you focus on your options.

Before moving on to the decor in a bedroom or play area, first consider the actual furniture you will select. The furniture sets the tone for the space. Purchasing a bed in the shape of a car, for example is a great way to get that race car theme into the room. On the other hand, being practical and purchasing furniture that will grow with your child can be just as valuable, if not more so. Depending on your budget and tastes, select the furniture, rugs, curtains and toy boxes for the space first. From this point, you can move on to select other options.

The next step is to consider a theme. You could go with a favorite cartoon character, one of theirs or perhaps even one of yours. On the other hand, you may want to consider selecting wall art in a whimsical style that represents who they are or what they love. You can even select designs that help you to create the space that invites imagination and creativity. To do this, consider each type of item you place into the room, from the wall art to the rugs and even to the types of toys you purchase for your child.

That is far from all you have to do, though. Take a look at some of the options available to you in terms of theme. You can find a wide range of selection to choose from online for your Land of Nod, but you will also find that sometimes it is up to you to select the colors, characters, ideas and inspirations from your own thoughts and desires for the space. You may want to select a special color pallet that works well in the room. On the other hand, a space theme, a princess theme, or even just a letter and number theme may be the route you are taking for your children. These are all good ideas, but take them and make them your own.

Then, focus on those items that are going to add substance and value to the space. For example, toy boxes are a critical purchase for most children’s rooms. You may want to consider the shelving options you have as well as tables and chairs. Placing hooks in the room offers a place for backpacks and coats. You may want to select gear that is all eco friendly, especially if your child is a baby or toddler. These items add function to the space while still giving it the child’s charm that you are likely after.

Room decor can be difficult for a child because often times the parent’s are unable to make decisions because their child is too young. However, by selecting furniture that will grow with the child, and then upgrading the look of the room every few years, your child will be in a welcoming and warm space that they will simply love to be a part of. Go ahead and consider the options available to you to create your child’s own Land of Nod in terms of the room decor, furniture and just everything else you need for your child’s space.

William asks…

Where can I find black bear kids room decor?

I have a rustic, log style home and want to decorate my son’s room in black bears….I am finding all kinds that would be okay for adult’s room but need something cute for a kids room. Any advice?

A:

I agree locating black bear decor for a young boys room is a challenge. That said, you should be able to find some great black bear decor items for your son’s room on Amazon. Here are some of my favorite black bear decorations that will grow with your child.

Thomas asks…

What is the best way to remove wallpaper from my kids bedroom walls?

I tried a hair dryer and it did not work very well. I’m peeling my kids wallpaper off with my nails but it’s taking me way to long. Any ideas?

A:

Believe it or not, the trick is to score the wallpaper first with a wallpaper scoring tool (like paper tiger) and applying some fabric softener (the cheap stuff is fine). What you want to do is put a little fabric softener on a sponge and let it soak in for 5 to 10 minutes and then your wallpaper should easily peel off.

DECOR IDEAS FOR YOUR KIDS ROOM

Your child’s room is important for your child as it is his domain. Kids in the age group of six to 10 are in their latency period when they are neither in their childhood nor in their adolescence. This is the time they explore and develop their minds. A well-set room for them helps them to have their own personal space that they love and call their own.

Their room needs a strong chair, a big writing desk and enough space for them to play around in the most funny and silly ways ever. The best thing is to get you kid involved while selecting the decor for his/her room. This raises the probability that he/she will take pride in what he has selected for himself in his own personal space. They have their own hobbies, interests and likes, and preferences about various things. As a parent, one should not ever overlook them while decorating their kids’ room. A room’s decor will vary according to the gender of the kid. A girl will like pink wallpapers, fairy tale themes for her self or other subtle ideas for her room. However, some ideas can be gender neutral. The following gender-neutral ideas will help you in decorating your kids’ room perfectly.

An inspirational theme
The basic step is to discover your kid’s area of interest and then to go more about it. By applying a theme to the room, you give your child an opportunity to develop and be influenced to become as a good person in his life. A kid may select astronomy for his room theme because he likes science and its wonders. Who knows he grows up as a scientist?

Save space
You can always visit a professional to help you save space in your kids’ rooms so that they look clutter free and neat all the time. Some useful tips given by experts are open closets, make shelves in the walls or opt for foldable fixtures in the rooms. An expert will be able to serve your needs better by having a personal look himself.

Mix those colors
A room will look good with different colors on each wall, floor and the ceiling. In addition, it is most likely to appeal almost all the kids. A very different wooden closet and a unique carpet will make the room all the more attractive.

Beds
Kid’s beds are available in various kinds of patterns such as stripes, plains or solids. In addition, they can match with one of your colors on the walls. Choose the one, which your child has selected, for him.

Writing desks
School going kids have to study and complete their homework at home. They need a spacious study table with a comfortable chair that supports a perfect posture for their growing bodies. Also, make sure the table is not kept right at the window. Rather a wall behind the kid is desirable for an ideal study space. The reasons for this can be attributed to the science of ‘Vaastu Shastra’.

8 Creative Decorating Ideas For Your Child’s Room

by Melisa Verch

Here are a few ideas to get you started with your child’s space.

1. There are sites online that will take a picture of your child doing an activity such as swinging a bat, completing a gymnastic move or sliding down a slide and turn it into a large cut-out for their wall. What a great way to capture the special moments in their lives and personalize their room.

2. Connect eye screws to the wall and then string ribbon or twine between them. Use colorfully painted clothes pins to hang artwork and photos on this clothesline. They can be changed easily as your child creates new things to display. For a little girls room, you can install a ribbon over a window. Fasten favorite doll clothes or vintage baby clothes across the top to make a sweet valance. Small clothes pins can be found in the doll department of toy or craft stores.

3. Old suitcases become fun storage containers when you paint them with your favorite colors. Check your attic for the hard shell versions that have been shelved in favor of the new luggage choices. Prime your finds then paint. You can add ribbons, stickers or free hand a design to personalize them. They can be filled with toys and easily stored under the bed or stacked in the room. Use them for holding memories such as artwork, souvenirs and favorite outgrown toys. The size and the inner pockets will allow you to store a lot.

4. Children love stories about when their parents were young. Share with them a toy or furnishing that was a part of your life growing up. They will love going to sleep listening to the same Fisher Price musical toy that you enjoyed when you were their age.

5. Big floor pillows are a must for a childs room. They will lay on them to read, play video games and if you are lucky, take an unexpected nap.

6. A row of peg hooks across the back of their door will encourage them to hang up often used articles such as pajamas, hats and handbags. If you have a hollow core door it may be better to put the hooks on the wall for more stability. Shop around and find cute designs that will look good when the hooks are empty. Craft stores have unfinished ones that you can paint or decoupage yourself.

7. Inexpensive lamps can be turned into interesting pieces by gluing things to the shade. A boys light would look fun with small plastic cars glued driving in different directions. A bag of bugs and lizards from the dollar store placed to look like they are crawling all over the shade would give it a creepy touch. How about creating one with a haphazard display of playing cards from an Old Maid or Go Fish game. They are colorful and silly, just the right touch for a childs room.

8. Visit a teacher supply store for colorful charts and maps for decorating the room. Kids will love the visual appeal it brings to their room and they will learn something too. The store also has great rugs that teach. They have caterpillar ABC carpets, water themed ones and even rugs for the world explorer.

These ideas will help you to design a room that will reflect your childs interest without breaking the budget. Their smiles will last for miles.
